Armadillidium vulgare, commonly known as the common pillbug or roly-poly, is a species of terrestrial isopod that is widely distributed across many regions of the world. These small, armored creatures are known for their unique ability to roll into a tight ball when threatened, providing them with a protective shield. The wild type Armadillidium vulgare is typically dark gray or brown in color with golden speckles, and has a segmented body with 7 pairs of legs. They are found in various habitats, such as gardens, forests, and urban areas, where they play important roles in decomposition and nutrient cycling.
